Duke's political science department has an excellent placement record, reflecting both the quality of the people we admit and the rigorous training and supportive environment we provide. Many of our students have gone on to teach in major research universities similar to Duke, and graduates of our program are now tenured at major research universities such as Harvard, Michigan, Caltech, McGill, UC San Diego, and UCLA. More recent Duke graduates are currently Assistant Professors at Stanford (2), The University of Chicago (2), UC San Diego, Washington University, The University of Toronto, UC Davis (2), Notre Dame, Indiana, Ohio State, UC Berkeley, and others. Some of our recent graduates teach at liberal arts colleges such as Haverford, Pepperdine, and Calvin College, while others choose to work for the government, military, legal profession and in private industry.
A few of our graduates decide that they want to do more than just study politics...Dan Lipinski, a 1998 Duke Ph.D., was elected to the House of Representatives from Illinois's 3 rd District in November 2004.
Rather than simply provide a list of a few of our most notable placement successes, we think that you as a prospective student will be best served if we provide a comprehensive picture of our overall placement. Below is a complete list (current as of Spring 2005) of all the data we have regarding where all our Ph.D.s since 1999 are employed. If you are a graduate and want to update your entry please contact the Assistant to the Director of Graduate Studies, Marylu Knight . All positions are Tenure-Track unless otherwise noted.
The Duke Career Center has resources/staff devoted specifically to graduate
students (both Masters and PhD students).
