EITM Travel Planning Questions

When should I plan to arrive?

For participants there will be two check-in periods to rooms on Sunday, June 15th. For both participants should meet in front of Kilgo Quad outside of House J on Duke’s main quadrangle.  The first check-in will be from 11am-Noon and the second will be from 4-5pm.

MFRs should plan on arriving at the Knight House by 4PM, Sunday June 15th.

Once the participants have had a chance to settle into their rooms, we will have a brief tour of Duke’s west campus at about 6:30 and will meet the lead faculty and MFRs for a group dinner.

The Knight House, in addition to serving as the residence for visiting faculty and MFRs will also be our primary meeting space for the duration of the institute.  A bit of background on the facility is here.  The House is a brisk walk from the rooms on campus and can be reached through the Duke forest as well.  We are currently working out a number of additional transportation options between campus and the Knight House.

EITM officially begins at 9AM, Monday, June 16th in the Knight House.

When should I plan to depart?

The Summer Institute will end at 5PM on Friday, July 11. Most people will leave that evening or the next day. Check out time for participants is 11:00 am Saturday, July 12.

How do I make my travel plans?

Participants should plan to fly into Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). You can either purchase your ticket yourself and be reimbursed for up to $500 (be sure to save your itinerary and boarding passes), or make arrangements through Gale Gentry Travel Inc. The latter option is probably better. Call 919-787-2511 and speak with Regina McAlexander (or you can email her at regina@galegentrytravel.com) and decide on an itinerary.  Regina will need to know that you are part of the EITM program; she will send Alexandra the itinerary so that Alexandra can issue the purchase order to pay for your ticket (i.e. if you use this option you will not need to wait to get reimbursed).

Is driving an option?

Absolutely.  While both Duke and municipal buses make it possible to get many places around Durham, having a car for the duration of EITM can be a plus.  Logistically, it is a good thing for the program if some participants do choose to drive.  Thus if driving is a possibility you might want to consider it.

If driving, you'll be reimbursed the going rate ($0.505/mi) for mileage (for which you should have documentation, such as a print out from mapquest), with a ceiling at the cost of a flight for the same distance.  MFR’s will be able to park at the Knight House and we can arrange parking on campus for participants who choose to drive.  Please e-mail Mike Brady to let us know if you will need a parking permit.

What if I am flying internationally?

For your flight to be eligible for reimbursement you must fly on a US carrier or carriers with US codeshares. We understand that the flight will likely be more than the $500 limit, and we will make do our best to reimburse beyond this as long as you are flying coach and have made every attempt to minimize costs.

What should I bring?

You should obviously bring clothes for warm and even hot weather (average temperatures for June and July are highs in the mid-to-upper 80s, lows in the mid 60s to lower 70s). Generally the dress code will be "grad school casual" (including dinners), but we suggest you bring at least one business-casual outfits for your presentation. Bring a laptop computer (see below), the reading material that was sent to you, and notebooks, pens, pencils, etc. You may want to bring a swimsuit and athletic clothes for the facilities on and around campus.

Bath towels and other bathroom amenities will be provided in the rooms, as will an alarm clock, pillow, and linens (no comforters). Hairdryers and irons are not provided - if you need one, bring it. Items such as laundry detergent are available for purchase in the Bryan Center nearby.

What are the rooms like?

The participant rooms are single occupancy with a shared bath/shower on the hall. All air-conditioned rooms are non-smoking, and equipped with alarm clocks, bathroom amenities, and Internet access. On each floor is a common room with cable television, telephone, refrigerator, and microwave.  EITM has sole occupancy of two floors of a dorm off the main quadrangle on Duke’s west campus.

How should I get from the airport (if flying) to Duke?

Driving time from RDU to Duke is about 20 minutes in light traffic conditions. Approximate rates for airport shuttle or taxi are $30.00 or less if shared. For shuttle services we recommend Charlene’s Safe Ride (1-800-835-8053) which needs to be arranged in advance. Visit www.primetimeshuttle.com or call 1-800-Red Vans for reservations and information. Keep your receipts and we will reimburse you for your taxi or shuttle expenses.

Participants should tell the driver to take them to the Duke Chapel traffic circle.  This will put you right on the main quadrangle and the check-in will be down the quad to the left of the chapel.

MFR’s will need to go to the Knight House.  Odds are that the driver may not know the destination by name.  The address is 1508 Pinecrest Road, Durham, NC 27705. From the airport take I-40 West to the northbound Durham Expressway/NC 147 (exit 279b). Then take exit 13 for Chapel Hill Street and turn right at the light. This will become Duke University Road where you should continue past the main entrance to campus and will come to a forced turn at Cameron Blvd./Academy Road/NC-751.  Turn left.  Pinecrest Road will be the first right.  The entrance to the Knight House will then be immediately on the right.

Computer-related Questions

Do I need to bring my computer?

Yes, you will need to bring your own laptop. A wireless antenna/card will be necessary to access the internet everywhere except your dorm room. There is wireless service over all of Duke’s campus and ethernet connections in the participants’ rooms. If you will not be able to bring your own computer, please let Mike know as soon as possible (email to mcb20@duke.edu.).

Is there any special software I should have loaded on my computer?

TBD – check back soon.

How do I connect to the wireless network when I get to Duke?

We will provide you with a Duke NetID and password that will be active for the duration of EITM. When you first connect your internet browser will prompt you for this information and you will have to register your computer to the network.  After that you will be connect wherever Duke wireless is available.

How will I print while at EITM?

We are still working on the details, but most likely you will have access to Duke’s e-print network.  You will have print budget allocated to your NetID where you can submit a print order from your laptop and then collect your print job by swiping your ID card at any number of e-print stations around campus.  We will also likely have a printer available for limited use at the Knight House.

What can I do if I want to take a break from thinking about the empirical implications of theoretical models?

Durham, and the larger Raleigh – Chapel Hill area, have a lot to offer by way of entertainment, dining, music, and nightlife.

  • A couple of general websites on Durham and the triangle
  • Entertainment – A few local to-dos while in Durham for the Summer
    • The Durham Bulls the local AAA baseball team made famous in part by the movie of the same title play all summer long.  Games are very affordable, the stadium is nice, and it is a nice way to spend a summer afternoon/evening
    • The Nasher Museum of Art on Duke’s campus offers a first rate collection with excellent visiting exhibits
    • The American Dance Festival (ADF) performs numerous different shows during their summer residency at Duke
    • The festival for the Eno is July 4-6 and features music, arts, outdoor recreation while raising money for a good local cause.
  • Dining – One of the big perks of living in Durham is the food.  We have a quite a large number of excellent restaurants for a city our size.  Below are a few suggestions but the best source for good finds are locals, faculty, and grad students
  • Music – With three major universities in the region the Triangle has quite a scene for a wide range of music
    • The two largest venues for concerts are the RBC center and Time Warner pavilion where Dave Matthews, Robert Plant, and Toby Keith are all playing during EITM.
    • The Cat’s Cradle in Carboro is also a relatively famous venue for up and coming artists and is a great place to catch a show.
    • A number of other venues in the area feature music on a regular basis. Here is  a broad listing of some of the artists that will be in the area during EITM
  • Nightlife – local places to go out at night
