Research & Travel Awards

DIPE makes grants (usually no more than $3,000) available to students to support conference travel, courses in qualitative methods, quantitative methods or languages, and pre dissertation research.

Conference Travel

Duke's graduate school generally provides one conference travel grant each year for students who have passed their preliminary examinations. DIPE makes additional travel grants to students who have not yet passed their preliminary exams or who, for various reasons, may need additional support in any one year. We fund 70% of actual conference travel and lodging expenses.

To apply, send a brief note to the DIPE administrator saying why you want to go, why the conference is important, and providing a budget for the trip and lodging expenses. You must confirm that you have already used up your graduate school conference funds for the year or that for some exceptional reason you cannot make the Graduate School application deadline.

DIPE will generally consider applications for all regularly scheduled conferences (APSA, ISA, etc.) only twice a year. Students should submit their applications for conference travel in the Fall and Winter by September 15th each year, and applications for conferences in the Spring and Summer should be made by January 31st .

We will keep a limited amount of additional funds in reserve each year to support students who wish to attend non regularly-scheduled conferences. Students should, wherever possible, apply at least a month before the date of the conference.

Summer Pre-Dissertation and Dissertation Grants

DIPE has limited funds (no more than $2500 per grant) to support pre-dissertation and dissertation research each summer. As with the conference travel funds, students should consider DIPE funds as a back-up, after they have applied to various other Duke sources such as the Center for European Studies, the Center for Slavic Studies, Latin American Studies, the Center for South Asian Studies and the office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs, all of which typically make summer research grants available each year.

To apply, send a brief note to the DIPE administrator saying what research you which to conduct, why it is important, and providing a budget for the trip and lodging expenses, if necessary. You must list in your application each of the alternative Duke sources to which you have applied, and the date by which you expect to hear whether these other applications have been successful.
